The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology is a research-oriented graduate school established by the Korean government in 1993 and includes since 2010 also an under graduate school. To enhance its competitiveness, GIST has carefully selected five leading fields of science and technology, which includes Information and Communications, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechatronics, Environmental Science and Engineering, Life Science and recently Nanobio Materialsas and Electronics as areas of special focus. All faculty and students are involved in Brain Korea 21 projects selected and supported by the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology(MEST). The new Department of Nanobio Materials and electronics (DNE) with about 30 domestic and international faculty members has been established in 2008 within the World-Class University (WCU) programme at GIST.
